Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have told me privately that the de-watering, repairs, and cleanup in New Orleans alone will take 8 to 10 months.  The major problem is the need to enter, inspect, and clean up EVERY SINGLE DWELLING UNIT in the flooded area.  Some of these will contain decomposing human and animal bodies, rotted food, bedding, and other organic waste.  A large part of the cleanup will be done by volunteers and returning residents.  They need supplies.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief maintains warehouses at strategic locations around the United States.  One of these is in Louisiana, near the current devastation.  Since the gale winds stopped blowing, the food, water, medical supplies, blanket, and other essential items stored there have been flowing into the Gulf Coast area.  The warehouse is getting bare.

If you want to contribute complete health kits and/or flood buckets, collect the items somewhere, notify me of the location, and I will have them picked up and moved to the local depot for shipment to Louisiana.

Health Kits

Flood buckets

Thank you for helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina. These supplies enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up, whether it be from the hurricane or flooding.

Deliver completed kits to the nearest United Methodist Church. The church will collect the kits, box them up, load them on a truck with donated flood buckets, then take them to the UMCOR Sager‑Brown Depot in Baldwin, Louisiana.

We invite you, your Sunday school classes, groups, committees and families to share in this mission project.

UMCOR helps connect the people to people in need by shipping donated supplies around the world. For more information on UMCOR, see the back page of this booklet.

Health kits provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes because of human conflict or natural disaster. Health kits are also used as learning tools in personal hygiene, literacy, nutrition and cooking classes.
